I love looking at the back to school ads, especially the ones that have college and dorm room supplies. It is so fun to be moving out on your own, ready to conquer the world! Well, it is fun for everyone but your parents. For them it is a bittersweet move. You are growing older, moving on to adulthood - there is a touch of sadness. But then again, you are moving on and out of the house - there could be some happiness there too!

First of all you need to remember that you are in college, so life will not be like at your parents house. You don't need all your dorm room supplies to be brand new and top of the line. In fact that is some of the fun of college life, living in a funky apartment with mismatched furniture and crazy decorations. This is your time to live life to its fullest and have fun (of course there should be some studying as well!). Buy furniture second hand from the classifieds or a thrift store. Use a fun patterned bed sheet as a chic cover for an old couch. Buy mismatched plates and other kitchenware to spice up your kitchen. Buy things in similar colors, but odd shapes and sizes - you are sure to find great dorm room supplies at a thrift store or your grandma's basement.

If you do find yourself needing to buy some dorm room supplies, shop smart! Make sure you are getting quality instead of just cute. Retailers are marketing to your sense of fun and style which is fine, but make sure the lamps, small appliances, etc., are well made as well. You don't want to have to buy new things every year so make sure you get dorm room supplies that will last your full college career. You never know, you might even want to pass them on to your younger siblings!
